Is this a an incredible deal or a hellish nightmare?
The phrase "automatic transmission slips when hot" is my biggest concern.

Hellish nightmare. They’re nice cars – civilised and decent to drive, with a lovely five-pot soundtrack. But the five-speed automatic in ‘99-’02 or so Volvos is infamously failure-prone. There are some things that can be done to alleviate the issue, but unless you feel up to a transmission swap, I’d stay away.

$450? The photos seem rather selective . Like the glove box cover looks to be missing and there are no pictures of the front seat. What can a transmission rebuild cost for that car, $5,000? How could this possibly end badly?

And that transmission phrase is ridiculous too. Hot outside or when the car gets hot? If the car gets hot, is there something else wrong. Nope, nope, nope. I’d rather spend time, energy, and money 0n my own beater.

The other thing I just noticed is it says its a 5 cylinder car. Can that be right?

Yes, that is correct. The S70 had inline fives. I can’t imagine the non-turbos are very fast though, my parents’ S80 with the I6 is definitely sluggish.

Yep. Volvo used (and still use) a rather excellent 20-valve inline-5 in many of their cars. They sound fantastic, have a decent amount of go, and are pretty long-lived unless horrendously neglected. Here’s what one looks like, from my ‘96 850R. Mine is turbocharged (and produces 240 hp from 2.3 litres, which isn’t bad for a ‘90s car), but it’s essentially the same engine. Note the five intake runners!
